Summary
Aluminium is usually alloyed with other elements in order to improve its corrosion resistance and strength and thus prepare it in an optimal manner for the respective application. One differentiates between casting alloys and wrought alloys: wrought alloys are intended to be further processed by mechanical working whereas casting alloys can be cast to the finished shape.
So-called master alloys are added to molten metal in order to obtain the required chemical composition or to favourably influence the resultant cast structure.
