Master alloys: Production

Different processes are available for producing master alloys depending on the alloy system concerned:

  • Dissolution of the elements to be alloyed in a molten metal
  • Aluminothermic of compounds with excess aluminium
  • Production of pressed shapes from metal powder

Other processes are occasionally used, such as carbothermic reduction, reduction using magnesium or fused-salt electrolysis. The production of master alloys from aluminium scrap as part of the aluminium recycling process is practically only possible by dissolving the alloying elements in the molten metal, either in solid or liquid form.
